In January of 2005 I decided to visit at what was said to be the worst time of year, just to get a sense of what it would be like. I loved it. He was hilarious even then. My best guess is that he's half greyhound and half English-Setter, and all goofball. There are no services and no developed camp sites. The water from the river is usually too silty to drink, even when the cattle are out of the canyon. The road is frightening for an inexperienced 4-wheel driver and impassable in wet weather. I was in the Canyon for nine days, hiking up towards Utah Flats (didn't quite make it), and then all the way to Clear Creek where I spent several days. I hiked out again on the Kaibab. It has its own sere beauty. I wouldn't have discovered it if it weren't for a friend who thought he had "found Utah" by taking the first right turn at Big Water after crossing the border from Arizona. For years,this was the only place he went because it was the only place he knew. I was greatly amused at his reaction when I introduced him to the multicolored ad glorious regions of the Escalante, Paria, Zion and Coral Pink Sand Dunes.
